Anything about Haiti's education ?

Bernie Cerra: The condition of education in Haiti is deplorable. For example, Haiti’s literacy rate of 53 % falls below the 90% average rate for Latin American and Caribbean countries (CIA, 2008). This rate shows that more than of the population age 15 and over cannot read or write in French, the official language that is taught in school. Currently, most Haitian schools are international private schools or Catholic private institutions that educate ninety percent of all students. However, efforts have been made to reform schooling to make education more accessible and relevant to the poor. Under President Aristide, the government passed a ten-year education plan with the goal of universal access to quality schools. The education budget increased from 9% to 22%, as school lunches were provided, uniforms were distributed, bus transportation was instituted, and literacy campaigns were instated. Even with these improvements, the reforms have been only partly successful at! best. For instance, the country still faces severe shortages in educational supplies and qualified teachers. Although plans for further reform have not been abandoned, the present economic and political crises in Haiti have overshadowed educational concerns. As a result, schooling remains a privilege of the upper and middle class families, fluent in French, who can afford supplemental fees such as school supplies or uniforms....Show more

Secondary schools enroll 20% of eligible-age children. The educational system of Haiti is based on the French system. Higher education is provided by universities and other public and private institutions. It is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education.[3]...Show more

Carmina Stickney: education in Haiti is terrible. There are only private schools which require money, so very few children even go to school because their families can't afford it, Haiti being a VERY poor country. There are several volunteer schools for regular kids, which include a lunch program, and are done entirely on a volunteer basis. There are not nearly enough of these schools, and many children go without an ed! ucation at all.
