my catfish likes to hide, is this normal?

Rubye Bonnin: Most catfish are schooling fish, so it would make sense that he's not schooling or active. What species of catfish is this? I don't know how you can just buy something for your tank and not know what kind of fish you're putting in your tank. Go research it or call the pet store and find what species it is and if it should have friends to shoal with. Also, most catfish are nocturnal....Show more

Joan Stavropoulos: man hes a fish that got seperated from all his fishy freinds wouldnt you be scared to hell if someone a 1000 times bigger just took you away and put you in a tank.

Malcom Fenoff: Catfish love to hide in caves, under rocks and bog wood, behind, anything. They will bury themselves in the sand. Don't worry, he won't suffocate and die. It's very natural and normal. They will even move plants around to block other fish from entering their caves. Sometimes you will see them pushing things around in the tank, moving the plants and decorations! to where he wants them. They also swish their tails, and move sand and stones into other parts of the tank. Don't be surprised if you look in the tank one day and can see the glass at the bottom of the tank with stones /sand pushed to one side. He is comfortable. Hope you have a nice big tank for him....Show more

Arnulfo Seegars: Without being sure what kind of catfish you have, the general view is that yes, many catfish like to hide & do not like being in the center of attention. Note that most fish shops have tanks that are bare & constantly lighted, he has no place to hide & could be showing signs of stress in swimming around trying to find a hiding place and his pals have the same idea.Your tank lighting could also be too bright for him. And if you had just bought him, he could still be stressed and need some time to get over the shock of being netted, separated from other catfish and transported, and then put into a strange tank with tankmates that he has never ! seen before or maybe would not even have encountered in his na! tural habitat. It's a scary world for him out there, so you need to give him some time. And don't be surprised if he's off his feed for at least a few days.To increase a fish's sense of security, the common steps taken are to cover at least the back wall of the tank, use darker colored substrate/gravel (note for new tank setups), provide plenty of hiding places that can fit size of fish (DIY caves using rocks or halved small gardening pots, fake cave ornaments, short lengths of PVC piping, short lengths of hollow bamboo, lots of plants) and introduce new fish into a darkened tank. As for lighting, you need fairly strong lighting for live plants but you can have some broad leaved plants like tiger lotus and also floating plants that can break the lighting and provide some shelter beneath leaves & roots. Smaller fish like tetras swimming in the open can also act as dither fish to encourage nervous fish that it is safe & ok to come out of hiding. It's just a matter of time so b! e patient. But it's really necessary to identify your fish (refer to good books with photos at your local library or larger bookstore) as it may turn out your fish is really a nocturnal species (if so, leave some food for him when you turn off the lights). Or try to provide a link to a good close up photo of him (if you can, given his hermit tendencies!) so we can try to identify him for you. Good luck!...Show more

Monty Sieloff: It s Normal because i have a cat fish and he hide also like yours at the beginning..I think it s normal with days it will socialize.

Joni Ziak: yes

Carlee Tangaro: My guess would be that becaue the Petstore had little or no cover for the catfish to hang out or hide in, that's why you see it very nervous and all over the tank. Not all catfish are schooling fish, but some species such as cory catfish prefer to be in groups of their own species. And as indicated from the lady above, most catfish are as well, noctournal and probably! why you saw the catfish all over the tank in the store with no cover. ! It would be quite normal from him to be inactive during the day....Show more
