Ninfa Asby: the kitchen in one of the houses i bought had a painted counter top. it looked fine at first, but it isn't durable. after a while the paint started chipping. we ripped it out and just tiled it - not that expensive really when you look for deals on tiles. i have a discount warehouse that has all the things needed in a house remodel for super cheap...things like tile, tubs, counters, and sinks - all brand new. you should check to see if you have anything like that near you. you could also check yardsales or thriftstores. just because someone is getting rid of the counter they remodeled doesn't mean it isn't usable....Show more
Emery Blando: I would get a few bids on what it would cost to replace the tops. Sanding or stripping them can be just as costly and most of the time the new paint doesn't last. If you're set on not replacing them, I would rent a shop vac and use that while you're sanding to keep the mess to a minimum.
Veta Slicker: a s! mall laminate counter top like is not expensive at all. Here look at these counter tops for $40 for a 4 foot piece and 60 for a 6 foot piece.
